The inception of Queens of the Stone Age may be traced back to Palm Desert, California in 1996. The band had to change their name from Gamma Ray at first as another group had the same name. Thus, Josh Homme's previous band, Kyuss, gave rise to Queens of the Stone Age. Their sound is a hybrid of many rock and metal subgenres, frequently influenced by German rock and macho elements. As their discography developed, they added dance and electronic music components to their sound. On November 20, 1997, the band had their first show at the OK Hotel in Seattle, Washington. In 1998, Queens of the Stone Age began touring after releasing their self-titled debut album. With the release of their second album, Rated R, in 2000, they made their breakthrough and were given the chance to open for well-known musicians like The Smashing Pumpkins and Foo Fighters. They then received an invitation to play at Ozzfest 2000.
