Cut Drama Unfolds: The Battle for a Spot in the Memorial's Final Rounds
There is a cap on participation in the Workday Memorial Tournament, and not every participant will proceed to the weekend. Prominent competitors such as Brian Harman and Wyndham Clark are in a precarious situation as they strive to qualify at Muirfield Village.
The 36-hole cut used in the event means that only the top 50 players and ties, as well as those who are within 10 strokes of the lead after two rounds, advance. This cut rule was added recently and is also applicable in some player-hosted invitationals.
Projections after the first round show that 54 players are at 3-over or better, while the cut line is now at 3-over 75. But Adam Hadwin, the leader, shot a scorching 6-under 66, suggesting the cut might fall at 4-over 76, as per the 10-stroke rule.
Both Clark and Harman shot 5-over 77 in their first rounds, which made it unlikely that they would play on the weekend. At Muirfield Village, the field encountered difficult circumstances on Thursday and is predicted to continue doing so on a dry Friday.
Players like Denny McCarthy, Rickie Fowler, Ben Griffin, Sungjae Im, Cameron Young, Harris English, and Kurt Kitayama are in the vicinity of the anticipated cut line for the second round. As of right now, 61 out of 73 players are expected to make the cut.
The Memorial Tournament has a substantial $20 million prize and 700 FedExCup points up for grabs for the champion. Players who don't make the cut, though, will not be awarded FedExCup points or cash.
