Chris Woakes, an all-rounder for England, has announced his temporary retirement from cricket due to the death of his father in early May. The 35-year-old, who has played for England in 203 international matches, said that he would not be participating in the next T20 World Cup 2024 in the United States and the West Indies. Instead, he plans to take a hiatus until he feels ready to return.
Woakes was picked by Punjab Kings (PBKS), but he did not play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. This season, he has also not played in county cricket. Woakes requested seclusion on social media after sharing that he and his family had experienced a difficult time in May.
Woakes sent a touching note expressing his expectation to return to cricket when the timing suits his family's requirements and stressing the importance of spending time with loved ones during times of bereavement. He also emphasized his father's fondness for Warwickshire, expressing his hope to play for the team and England again in the future.
Woakes, a key player for the England team that qualified for both the Cricket World Cup 2019 and the T20 World Cup 2022, last competed for Sharjah Warriors in the International League T20 (ILT2) in February. He has been out of the spotlight ever since, attending to personal affairs.
